Description and Basic Information ::

Carnegie Hall has been a prominent fixture in the New York City entertainment industry since its 1891 opening. It is a world-renowned concert venue, with an emphasis on classical music performances. For anyone looking to enjoy some of the country’s finest jazz, classical or folk performances, as well as numerous special events, we strongly suggest a show at this storied venue.
Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964, the hall is unique in several ways. First, it acts as landlord, with studios available for rent. Second, the building is so committed to retaining its original architectural quality that any proposed changes to the structure must be granted approval by the Landmarks Preservation Commission---to ensure that everything about the hall is true to its original appearance and use. Concerts take place either in the 2,804-seat main auditorium, or the Weill Recital Hall, usually reserved for up-and-coming musicians.
Carnegie Hall presents more than 100 concerts and events each year. Past performances include visits by the esteemed Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic orchestras. The James Levine-led MET Orchestra also makes regular appearances.
Since 1985, a new promotion - Carnegie Hall’s Music Theater Program - has featured revivals of vintage American musicals by such individuals as Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Vincent Youmans. These events usually take place in the Weill Recital Hall.
Refreshments and dining are available in the Travelers Group Café, which offers pre-concert dining as well as coffee during intermissions. A gift shop also is on-site. A visitor tour program initiated in 1987 continues to expand in function and popularity.
The hall is one of the premiere venues in the world for classical performances, and is highly recommended by patrons and critics alike. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to take in a show. |
