:: Description and Basic Information ::
Located in the heart of downtown New York City, the Center for Jewish History offers incredible insight into one of the most persevering cultures throughout the ages. The Center’s dynamic array of exhibitions, cultural events and public programming has been dedicated to serve the historical, cultural and educational interests of its American and international communities. With nearly 100 million archival documents, a half-million books, and countless photographs, artifacts and artwork, the Center is the largest repository outside of Israel to document the Jewish experience.
More than just a well-stocked museum or research center, the CJH incorporates the partnership of five major institutions of Jewish scholarship, art and history: American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Leo Baeck Institute, Yeshiva University Museum and the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Catalogued throughout the Center’s reading room are numerous rare collections of the said constituent organizations. Many such materials, which include rare books and periodicals, art and artifacts, photographs, personal papers and organizational records, are one-of-a-kind items found nowhere else.
The American Jewish Historical Society is the world’s leading institution for the collection and preservation of original materials documenting the Jewish experience in the Americas from the 1500s. The American Sephardi Federation (ASF) is an umbrella organization that represents the diverse spectrum of Sephardic Jews in the United States. The Leo Baeck Institute is a research, study and lecture center whose library and archives offer the most comprehensive documentation for the study of German Jewish history. The Yeshiva University Museum collects and preserves an incredible range of objects that reflect Jewish culture, including ceremonial pieces, fine and folk art, textiles, rare books, manuscripts, photographs, ethnographic material, and ephemera. YIVO is the preeminent center for the study of East European Jewry and Yiddish language, literature, and folklore, containing the world's largest collection of Yiddish books, documents, and other artifacts related to the history of East European Jewry.
The Center, as a whole, is open from 9am to 6pm from Monday through Thursday and from 9am to 4pm on Fridays. Guided tours of the Center are offered every Tuesday and Thursday at 2 p.m. Tickets are priced at $6 for adults and $4 for seniors/students, and may be purchased at the Center Shop. The tour includes all major public areas and exhibits. (The tour does not include the Yeshiva University Museum and exhibits. Visitors must purchase YUM admissions tickets separately, see below.)
The Yeshiva University Museum is open on Sundays from 11am to 5pm; Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11am to 5pm and Thursdays from 11am to 8pm. Admission to the museum is $6 per person, $4 for seniors and adults. The museum offers weekly gallery tours on Sunday at 2pm and 3pm and on Thursday evenings at 6:30pm.
