Broaden your cultural horizons at El Museo del Barrio, located on 104th Street at the northern end of 5th Avenue's Museum Mile. The museum’s collection of Latin American and Puerto Rican reflects the surrounding neighborhood, known as Spanish Harlem. In fact, the name of the museum translates to ''The Neighborhood's Museum.''
The museum was founded in 1969 during the civil rights movement---and the need for a center for Latin American culture. At that time, it was thought that too many American museums were Eurocentric, without giving much attention to other cultures. El Museo del Barrio moved around a bit, first from a single classroom, to several locations from 1969 to 1976, finally ending up in the beautiful Heckscher Building in 1977.
This is the only museum in the United States dedicated to Puerto Rican and Latin American art - one more reason to visit. Call ahead for information on lectures, special exhibits and programs.
New York City is a melting pot of many ethnic groups and cultures and it seems only fitting to learn about some of these at the museum. El Museo's permanent collection contains Puerto Rican art, as well as art from the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Art ranges from pre-Columbian artifacts to work from contemporary Latin American artists. Don't miss the exhibit called ''Santos de Palo,'' a collection of 45 saints carved from wood. |
