Description and Basic Information ::

The Jewish Museum allows visitors to explore the evolution of Jewish history and culture. Situated in a four-story Gothic mansion built in 1908, the museum is not exclusively dedicated to the tragedies of the Holocaust (that would be the Holocaust Museum in Battery Park), but instead focuses on the true identity and development of Jewish culture through the ages. Housed on the third and fourth floors of the museum, the permanent exhibit ''Culture and Continuity: The Jewish Journey” is divides into four sections: ''Forging an Identity,'' ''Interpreting a Tradition,'' ''Confronting Modernity'' and ''Realizing a Future.'' The exhibit(s) not only depict Jewish prevalence through various ages of persecution, but also celebrate the evolution and contributions of the culture, complete with artifacts, documents, ceremonial pieces, artwork, and multimedia presentations from ancient times to present day.
The first two floors of the museum display the traveling exhibits, which highlight many of the prominent periods in Jewish history, often displaying rare artifacts and artwork. Also on the first floor is the Design Shop, which sells artwork and designs from contemporary Jewish artists. The Jewish Museum consistently adds to its renowned collection, incorporating new media and technology throughout the two-floor exhibition. |
