Pronounced “Lay Miz”, this Broadway institution is one of the most renowned productions in the world, and at no wonder considering its fabulous plot, memorable songs and extremely impressive stage set. Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, Les Miserables follows the lives of Jean Valjean and Cosette during the French revolution. The action begins in 1815 as Valjean, a man condemned to 19 years of hard labor for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his family, finds the world around him has crumbled both physically and morally. Yet he meets a man who believes in him, and so he breaks his parole to begin a new life. Constantly on the run and pursued by the authorities Valjean crosses the landscape of early 19th century France in the midst of a revolution---in many aspects additional to the historical battle. From Valjean’s adoption of the orphan Cosette, to plots of the thieving Thenardiers, to the revolutionary fire of the student rebels who fight on in the streets of Paris, to the final confrontation between Jean Valjean and the police, the story of Les Miserables will have you on the edge of your seat. Winner of the 1987 Tony award for Best Musical, Les Miserables has been on Broadway for more than a decade. Romantic and spellbinding at once, you would be hard pressed to turn down a couple of passes to this one. It runs out of the Imperial Theatre, former home of “Fiddler on the Roof.”
Opened: March 12, 1987. Category: Musical. Running Time: 3 hours 10 minutes with one intermission. 1987 Tony Awards: Best Musical, Best Featured Actor (Michael Maguire), Best Featured Actress (Frances Ruffelle), Best Director, Best Book of a Musical, Best Score, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design. |
