Description and Basic Information ::

Set in downtown New York’s Alphabet City, “Rent” is a gripping look at life, love, and living with AIDS, through a group of East Village hipsters. Directed by Michael Grief, “Rent” is a moving story with a memorable score. It’s one of the new, instant classics and the subject of a lot of mainstream media coverage and praise. Operating out of the Nederlander Theatre, which also played host to Orson Welles and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in previous incarnations. A terrific and well-schooled cast is the primary reason why the production runs as smoothly and enjoyably as it does. Writer Jonathan Larson won a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for this adaptation of Puccini’s “La Boheme.” The production won the 1996 Tony Award for “Best Musical.”
Category: Musical. Running Time: 2 hours 45 minutes with one intermission. Opened: April 29, 1996. 1996 Tony Awards: Best Musical, Best Featured Actor (Wilson Jermaine Heredia), Best Score, Best Book of a Musical. |
