:: Description and Basic Information ::
One of the most famous icons in the world, the Statue of Liberty has attracted more than 3.5 million people since its renovation and subsequent reopening on July 4, 1986---our lady’s centennial. Dedicated to the United States by the French in 1886, the statue was designed by Gustave Eiffel (of Eiffel Tower fame), and the 154-foot pedestal on which it rests was designed by Richard Hunt. Since then, the structure has been a symbol of America’s willingness to care for the unfortunate and downtrodden, happily scooping them up from their emigrating ships and allowing them access to the Land of Opportunity. Though things are a bit different in today, the message of Miss Liberty remains.

After taking the ferry across the Hudson Bay to Liberty Island, visitors will be standing toe to toe with The Statue of Liberty. She’ll be much taller than you are. But to even the score a bit, visitors can climb the coronary-inducing 354 steps to the crown, or simply take the elevator to the 10th floor. Have no fear; the statue is also completely wheelchair accessible via the aforementioned elevator. The altitude affords a great view of the nearby New York skyline, and it makes a great story to tell friends. Warning: to actually reach the crown, remember that the climbing wait can be pretty extensive, so bring a newspaper or a copy of the Constitution or something, because it can take a while. Second, if you are the least bit afraid of heights, do not attempt the climb; visitors are often forced to wait mid- or three-quarters-the way up, and it’s a suffocating, straight-down view. Also, call ahead to check which ferry you need to be take in order to have time to visit the crown.

For a different view of the Statue, charter a boat and go at night. Lady Liberty is absolutely radiant when she’s all dolled up after dark, and it provides the perfect atmosphere for wining and dining (and humming the Star Spangled Banner).

The Statue of Liberty stands upon Liberty Island, adjacent to Ellis Island south of the Lower Manhattan area. Access is provided exclusively by the Circle Line Statue of Liberty Ferry and leaves from either the battery in Lower Manhattan or from Liberty State Park in New Jersey. For details on departure times and locations, call (212) 269-5755. Please take note: the only way to gain access to the island is through the ferries, as no privately owned vessels are granted permission to dock.
