:: Description and Basic Information ::
The United Nations Headquarters occupies an eighteen-acre area on First Avenue between 42nd and 46th Streets. It’s one of the most recognizable structures in the world and a “Must See” for any visitor to New York.

A distinguishing feature of the United Nations Pavilion is the display of 189 flags from all over the world. The flags are placed in alphabetical order starting on 48th street with Afghanistan and ending with Zimbabwe on 42nd Street.

Although it is customary for the American flag to be flown higher than other nation states while on US soil, since the UN building technically lies on international ground, all flags are flown at even height. The grounds are treated as international territory and are not subject to US laws. The United Nations even has its own fire department, security force, and postal system.

The United Nations Headquarters consist of four main buildings: the General Assembly building, the Conference Building, the Secretariat building, and the Dag Hammarskjold Library. An international team of 11 architects, led by Wallace K. Harrison from the United States, designed the complex.

Guided tours of the United Nations operate daily from the rear of the General Assembly Lobby in over twenty languages. The guides explain the function of the United Nations while taking you through some of the main Council Chambers and the General Assembly Hall.

You can also stroll in the UN’s riverside gardens and statuary. Take note of the statue of St. George slaying a dragon. A gift from the USSR when it was the USSR, the body of the dragon is made from the body of an ICMB.
